The sacred Himalayan valley of Tsum situated in north of Gorkha district of Nepal. Actually the word Tsum comes from the Tibetan word “Tsombo” which means vivid. The trail heads up the valley of the Budi Gandaki River through wild and unexplored country inhabited mainly by members of the Gurung ethnic groups. Tsum Valley region is still less explored in comparison to other trekking areas, with relatively off beaten paths in comparison to the more popular trekking trails. The hospitable local people (Tibetan group “Tsombo”) have their own way of family life, which might be surprisingly unique for the visitors. People of this region follow the practice of polyandry; all the brothers of a family can marry with a single girl legally. Compared with other areas, The Tsum Valley and Manaslu area is extremely rich in cultural assets. The valley is dotted with gompas (Buddhist monasteries), Chortens and mani walls. The longest mani walls (over 250 meters) are at Dzong and Phurpe. The valley preserves steps of the great Buddhist Yogi Chyuchin Milarepa and story about Guru Padmasambhava circumbulation. The people here never slaughter animals, even as sacrifice to the gods.
The trek to Tsum Valley takes you deep into the majestic surroundings of the Mt. Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges. In the initial stage of the trek, we traverse the Budhi Gandaki Valley through mix of lush forest, terraced fields and scattered villages. As we leave the main Manaslu Trail for Tsum valley, we feel the thrilling of entering truly into the hidden valley. While on the trek, we also pass through the alpine forests, glacial rivers, and enjoy the warm hospitality of local people. We also visit the ancient Buddhist Gompas including the Milarepa’s Cave, Rachen gompa, Mu Gompa among many others.
